The Red Cloud Chapter Monsanto Trip
On Monday, September 28th Red Cloud FFA students and Science students took a trip to the Monsanto Seed Research and Learning Center. Brad Wulf, a local Dekalb Seed representative helped set up the visit. We left bright and early at 6:00 a.m. Mr. Strickland and Mr Heldt ended up taking 37 students. The following students went; Jacob Kucera, Tony Lammers, Kasey Ord, Jared Stitt, Shelby Peters, Brittany Lewis, Taylor Neiman, Kayla Kucera, Kim Morris, Kyle Prellwitz, Kelsey Parker, Andrew Cole, Toby Colvin, Jason Curtain, Dakota Delka, Taylor Goose, Jared Sibley, Sarah Shuck, Ben Hobbs, Jacob Nikodym, Hector Rodriguez, Tanner Ruppercht, Dylan Shannon, Mia Springer, Courtney VanWey, Levi Vogler, Michaela Wulf, Anthony Weber, Quincy Randall, Kabrina Wescoat, Tara Wulf, Mathew Morris, Emily McCleary, Garret Vogler, Bailey Lewis, Jamie Nikodym, and Crystal Horn.
We started out the day with a few videos about the Monsanto Seed Research and Learning Center and talked about a brief history about the Learning Center. Then having such a large group the students were split into two groups. The first group got to ride a tram around the 160 acre field research area to see seed plots of crops grown back in the early ages and compared them to the crops we have today. They learned about all the new technology used to grow the new crops such as biotechnology and genetically modifying. On the trip the students were told to pick a few weeds and bring them back with them. We learned to use a dichotomous key to identify weeds. We learned a lot about seed and water research.
