Wilcox-Hildreth FFA Chapter

Students of the Wilcox-Hildreth FFA Chapter have been involved in many activities this year. They have participated in Land and Livestock Judging and some members qualified for state. Many of the chapter members have created a test plot in which they planted and harvested 39 different varieties of corn from 21 different companies. The junior class of the chapter took a field trip to a local farm and got some hands-on experience pregnancy checking cattle under the supervision of a veterinarian. The students were allowed to reach in and see for themselves whether or not cattle were pregnant and students also learned about what the veterinarian and owners look for when cows go through the chute, such as, whether or not they have teeth, if the cow or heifer is going to be late having its calf, and the cows weight change from year to year. Putting cattle through the chute also gives the veterinarian the chance to give booster shots to prevent the cattle from getting diseases such as scours and black leg. One shot was filled with vitamin A.
