Superior FFA attends national convention

Ten Superior FFA members attended the 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN October 20-24th. The students were accompanied by Advisor Dave Barnard and Mr. Bruce Tinkham. This year’s theme was, “Lead Out Loud”. The convention headquarters was in Conseco Fieldhouse where the Indiana Pacers NBA team plays. Approximately 52,000 members, parents and quests attended this leadership event. The convention was carried by RFD TV.
Ty Rempe and Rebecca Genung represented the Chapter as delegates. They attended a banquet dinner at the Marriott Hotel and went on stage to receive the National Chapter Award plaque the local chapter earned. Superior was rated a three-star Chapter on the national level. On Saturday at ceremonies in Lucas Oil Stadium, SHS graduate Kellie Tinkham was awarded the American Degree award. Kellie received the golden key of the American Degree and framed certificate. Lucas Oil Stadium is where the Indianapolis Colts NFL team plays. Kellie is currently a sophomore at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO. Her parents are Bruce & Karen Tinkham.
On Wednesday the Superior FFA Ag Issues Forum Team competed at the Westin Hotel. The team earned a bronze team plaque on their presentation on wind energy. Each member also received a bronze medal. Texas won this national competition. Members of the Superior team included Bethany Brittenham, Victoria Simonsen, Tyler Strobl, Andrew Brittenham, Melissa Guikey, Katrina Wulf and Kori Tinkham. The group also enjoyed several tours. On Friday evening the students attended a Pro Rodeo competition at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. They toured the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indy 500 race. The group toured the National FFA Center, the Indiana State Capitol, the Indiana War Memorial and Museum, and attended the FFA Career Show. The FFA members enjoyed several convention leadership sessions including the keynote address given by Mr. Mike Rowe of television’s “Dirty Jobs”. On the way to Indianapolis the members visited President Abraham Lincoln’s tomb in Springfield, IL.
