Nebraska Hog Inventory Down 6 Percent
Nebraska inventory of all hogs and pigs on December 1, 2009, was 3.15 million head, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. This was down 6 percent from December 1, 2008 and down 6 percent from September 1, 2009. Breeding hog inventory, at 370,000 head, was down 3 percent from December 1, 2008 and down 3 percent from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 2.78 million head, was down 6 percent from last year and down 6 percent from last quarter.
The September-November 2009 Nebraska pig crop, at 1.80 million head, was 1 percent below 2008. Sows farrowing during the period totaled 180,000 head, down 3 percent from last year.
Nebraska hog producers intend to farrow 175,000 sows during the December 2009-February 2010 quarter, down 5 percent from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago. Intended farrowings for March-May 2010, are 180,000 sows, down 5 percent from the actual farrowings during the same period the previous year.
