Bite When the Temperature is Right

By Andrea Nisley, University of Nebraska - Lincoln Extension Educator, Dawson County

Using a food thermometer is the only reliable way to ensure safety and to determine desired doneness of meat, poultry, and egg products. These foods must be cooked to a safe minimum internal temperature to destroy any harmful microorganisms that may be in the food. One benefit of using a food thermometer is avoiding over-cooking your food.
Cooking foods to the proper temperature helps you to serve safe food to your family and friends. The “Bite When the Temperature is Right” program will focus on the different types of thermometers available for use when preparing food and how to use each thermometer correctly. Participants will also learn how to calibrate a thermometer. A cooking temperature chart will let program participants know what temperature their foods should reach to be safe to eat.
The Family and Community Education (FCE) educational program lesson “Bite When the Temperature Is Right” will be provided by the University of Nebraska Extension Service and presented by Andrea Nisley, UN-L Extension Educator. The program is available to Family & Community Education club lesson leaders and community group representatives at these locations:
Lexington Friday, January 29 9:30 am Extension Conference Room, Fairgrounds
Gothenburg Friday, January 29 1:30 pm American Lutheran Church Conference Rm.
